Blackberry Services Ban Feared

Earlier the Indian government asked Research in Motion (RIM) to provide a way to decrypt Blackberry messages. The government gave a deadline; 31st Mar, else Blackberry services would be terminated. Now there has been a turn of events and the government has asked all telecom companies to have security systems in place to decrypt Blackberry messages; else a complete ban on the service. The time allotted to the companies is 15days. There are over 400 thousand users of Blackberry devices who would be affected. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has issued directives to telecom service providers to work out specifics of how to provide full-proof security with concerned RIM Canada officials. The final outcome of these talks will unfold along with passing time over the next couple of weeks.

Tata Teleservices Virgin Mobile Strike Youth Cord

The recent tie-up between GSM operator Tata & Virgin has plans to strike it different in India. While Tata will provide the base, the later is planning to target the mobile youth audience. Sources say that out of the total mobile population, about 44% comprises of youth & Virgin is all set to strike the right cord to capture that market.

The services that the joint venture is planning to release aren’t confirmed but it’s only known that they will be hip and should go very well with the mobile youth. The services will revolve around providing freedom through their to-be launched services. Other GSM operators aren’t making any statements about what they think. All they have to say is, we are going to wait-n-watch and then accordingly work on something. I say that for now the other GSM operators are staying cold on the face but are warming up to fight back and contain/increase their market share.

fring partners spread fringing freedom!

So, how do you give fringing freedom to as many fringsters as possible?

This is a question we’re always asking ourselves at fring, and one of the answers we’ve just come up with is the fring Affiliate Program (just rolls off the tongue, huh? :) It basically gives other players such as SIP, Broadband VoIP ISPs & WiFi providers, a way to offer their services easily to mobile phone users. And here’s the cool part - all the fiddly bits such as user name and password, login details, account settings etc are pre-configured, so it’s hassle free set-up for the user and the account is ready to go mobile immediately after downloading fring.
It’s another example of fring’s openness and freedom. Anyone can come and play and offer fring’s freedom of choice to their customers. Very cool we hope you’ll agree!

If you’re clever enough to have your own SIP, Broadband VoIP ISP or WiFi accounts, go and see if your provider has signed up to fring – if not, send them our way – it’s free of charge for you and for them! ;)

If you want to know more see our press release.

New fringME! & now for UIQ as well

Our web-to-mobile chat interface; fringME! has gained immense popularity. This has led us to develop the widget further. We now have a flash version of the widget to support many of the social networking sites like MySpace. The widget now also supports UIQ handsets but without the find me feature (support will soon follow with the release of UIQ handsets with GPS).

For more info about fringME! or to get one for yourself click here.

Important! You will need the latest version of fring to use fringME! Also fring’s privacy settings on your handset allow you to switch the fringME! location feature ON or OFF (you know, like ‘Opt in and out’… perfect for those occasions when you don’t want to be found!)
