What & Why an EDGE phone
Why do you need to opt for an EDGE-ready phone? Well, for us Indian, it really doesn’t matter much. Most Indians don’t yet connect to the internet through our mobile phones & even the few who do are happy with GPRS. It’s inhuman for us to not want more! As humans, we have a greedy tendency. Therefore, I will give you a reason to why being greedy is good.
Well EDGE is the ‘more’ to GPRS. It gives you the edge over a GPRS connetion in terms of speed. With GPRS speed is limited to only 32Kbps while over EDGE the speeds of up to 256Kbps can be attained. Well you must be thinking that it’s going to cost you more; not at all. Let me break the ice for ya’ll. It depends more on your service provider. The network you are on must support EDGE. At the moment service providers Hutch & Airtel support EDGE (Please inform us if there are other networks that support EDGE). If you are on these two networks you’ll already be enjoying surfing the internet through your phone. All you have to do is activate GPRS and your phone will automatically choose EDGE over GPRS.
This should be good news to my fringster friends, this is one way of cutting down the lag time when on a call. So when buying or upgrading your handset just make sure it supports EDGE and if your network can provide you that ‘EDGE’.

WiFi hotspots
By now most people who swing around with their laptops or those fine-tuned in IT know about WiFi. Even then there is a good chance that most might not be aware about the WiFi services available in India. Mobile service providers such as Reliance, BSNL, Dishnet, Tata, Airtel, etc. have already targeted corporates & will eventually target the masses. For now though those who are equipped with WiFi devices can make use of the many hotspots available in the metros. While some of them will require subscription there are many free WiFi hotspots. These hotspots mostly comprise of hotels, cafés, and the airport; expect to see the trend to be followed in malls very soon. This is a good plunge for the Indian metros, especially to see people use the service. For more info on WiFi hotspots around in India head over to the following links below.
These links will list close to 200 free hotspots across the nation. Though its not all you can always expect unlisted branches of cafés mentioned to offer free WiFi. So walk into your nearest café of Barista, Café Coffee Day, Mocha, etc. and enjoy free internet over your WiFi supported device (laptop, mobile, PDA, etc.). Now you can sip on some hot coffee or chill to some ice tea while surfing the web.
For fringsters this is your change to exploit the mobile voip facility to make free mobile calls. All you’d need is a phone with WiFi capabilities and oh ya the obvious fring software loaded.
fring on Sony Ericsson finally the P990i supported
If you have been waiting a long time, don’t worry it has finally arrived!!! All you Sony Ericsson fans can be relieved to know that fring is available for the P990i. You can get fring on your Sony Ericsson P990i in 3 steps:
1. Check that you have the latest firmware. (Go to Main Menu / System Information. The latest firmware is R6D23). If you don’t have it, get it from Sony Ericsson. Go grab a cup of coffee - it will take about 15 minutes to install.

3. Get fring via SMS as usual (fring should be up & running within about a minute as usual)
