Google takes ’street view’ mobile

The boys and girls at Google are hard at work improving well ‘all things Google’.

Just last week they released the shiny new and improved My location feature for Google Mobile Maps.

“My Location uses cellphone radio mast positions to triangulate and work out your rough location. Until now it has only been able to give a rough (within just under a mile) approximation” The newly released updated promises to be much more accurate.

“The software now makes better use of relative signal strengths and - in areas with more masts - will use this info to pinpoint you even more closely.” Pocketpicks.co.uk

and if you were thinking wow thats great, just wait until you see Google’s latest release.

Introducing Google Mobile Maps ‘Street View’.

“Street view, if you are unfamiliar, is the pedestrian-eye-level view of, erm, streets.” Google’s Street View is one of the best features on Google Maps and now thanks to the hard working Google team, this great new feature can now be taken now mobile.

Sadly though there are currently no street view images available for South Africa. Word on the street however is that a local South African blogger is pushing to get Google Street View in South African and hopefully Google will soon catch the hint, sign the contracts and sends over the street view equipment to start mapping our roads ;-)

Until that time we will have to be content with ’street viewing’ The USA and a few other supported countries.

  1. I would like to get involved in the south african google StreetView project. Please tell me if you know the details. StreetView will be very useful for SA especially with the 210 soccer world cup. I am willing to volunteer if need be.

  2. I think that it would be an ideal job for someone who likes driving and is interested in mapping and photography. Please could you give details of the project as I am interested in being involved. I agree with James in light of the 2010 World Soccer Cup this will be good for South Africa.
