GoogleTalks your language and fring delivers

Здравствуйте. Добро пожаловать в Южную Африку.

Ok, So I don’t really speak Russian, but thanks to GoogleTalk and the wonders of modern technology I can now have a conversation with someone who has never spoken a word of English in his life using GoogleTalk and a great new translation bot that works through GoogleTalk. The translation bot automatically translates between various languages and sends them via IM. “For those not familiar with bots, a (ro)bot is a piece of software that acts as a chat contact and provides some fun or useful functionality.” GoogleTalk Blog

The good news for fringsters is that you can now turn your mobile phone into a mobile pocket translator. This is especially useful when traveling.

If you want to try this great new service, just add [ en2fr@bot.talk.google.com ] as a friend in Google Talk and send it a message to translate from English to French.

For additional languages use “[from language]2[to language]@bot.talk.google.com” the short codes are as follows: ar2en, de2en, de2fr, el2en, en2ar, en2de, en2el, en2es, en2fr, en2it, en2ja, en2ko, en2nl, en2ru, en2zh, es2en, fr2de, fr2en, it2en, ja2en, ko2en, nl2en, ru2en, zh2en. So, for French to German translation, talk to fr2de@bot.talk.google.com.
