This is a screenshot of the dial pad for fring’s new linux offering, namely fring for Linux version (1.2.1.63) . Another addition is a history TAB.
It’s a neat looking addition for a neat new tool.
two mobile phone population explosions
ITWIRE reports that there are now more mobile phones in use in the UK than there are people. With all those phones, luckily fring runs on over 50 different brands of mobile phones. There are about a thousand types of handsets that are fringing!
motion to energy
The Gigaom blog reports that a Boise company M2E Power will start selling a mobile phone charger “…that can convert six hours of everyday movement…into one hour of talk time..”

The new technology is called “motion-harvesting” and should be able to convert walking, shopping and commuting time into talk time.
How’s this for an idea? A wi-fi smartphone with motion-harvesting, and fring. Maybe the lowest cost of operation phone setup of all!!
hitting the streets
The ‘Sydney Morning Herald‘ reports that Google ‘Street View’ has recently launched Australian street views. It’s interesting to note that some real estate sites have already added Google street views as part of their house listing services.
Here are two of my favourite Google street views applications. First there is the Streetview guide to the route of the Tour De France and StreetView Fun which collects unusual and fun sights seen in Streetview.
As you can see, you can customise and embed your GoogleMaps and StreetView to your blog or web site.

fring family just got bigger
fring keeps the firsts coming. This year fring pioneered mobile VoIP for the apple iPhone. Then the release of the fringAPI planted the seeds for a growing ‘ecosystem‘ of fring Add-Ons. But the fring team aren’t relaxing. Now they’ve gone for the hat trick…

fring is breaking down the barriers, and it is now bringing the world’s most popular open source systems into the family.

And the fring family is big. There are as many as a thousand handset models now supported. And to top that off, fring is working hard to extend the benefits of the fringAPI to the whole, now extended, family.

iPhone essentials
The iPhone, as everyone in Australia now knows, has officially landed in Oz.
There must have been twenty people lined up at seven thirty outside my local suburban Optus mobile phone shop just to get one. And it’s mid-winter here.
And here’s some essential information for all those new Australian iPhone users out there. It’s from fring, of course.

What do Facebook, Gmail notifier, Orkut, vTap and Yandex.mail notifier all have in common?
