fring away at Starbucks

Starbucks Logo

Starbucks is one of my favorite coffee shops in Australia and because they have Wi-Fi hotspots it’s a great place to fring from too!

A friend of mine, whom I recently converted to fring, likes to use the Telstra Wi-Fi hotspot that is located at most Starbucks shops, to have a coffee and call her family in the Czech Republic.

My friend uses the Wi-Fi casual rate and is charged at 20 cents per minute, so she is able to talk for much longer and a whole lot cheaper on her fring calls to Europe whilst enjoying her favorite Venti caramel latte!

Cool new business mobile site

Fairfax Digital has released a new business mobile site for their Sydney Morning Herald newspaper called Business Day Mobile. Browse the latest Australian business news, market information, currency, interest rates and stock data.

Whilst Fairfax has had a small play in non carrier specific mobile sites in the past, it is impressive to see they are now investing more in their Internet sites for mobile.

Oh and the other impressive part is that mobile ads displayed on their mobile site are designed for mobile too so when you click on them you get taken to a lovely mobile friendly page. Click away!

Point your mobile browser to http://m.businessday.com.au !

Flying Virgin Blue in Australia?

Recently I flew Virgin Blue to Adelaide and I tried out their business lounge facilities called….wait for it…. The Lounge. Whilst the rather expensive join up fee may be a barrier to entry for many, they have a casual entry fee of AUS$30 if you re flying the airline.

Like most business lounges you get access to the free food, hot and cold running beverages, showers and a place to keep from the maddening crowds, but the cool part for fringsters is access to the free wireless Internet access. So, you can fring away happily whilst reclining in the lap of luxury.

If you are flying Virgin Blue to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide and find you have a long wait for your flight, then the AUS$30 entry fee becomes many well spent.

Especially when you have so many fringing people you need to talk to…..

fringing on your Sony Ericsson P990i!

Woohoo! fring now supports the Sony Ericsson P990i in Australia.

So, head on over to our download section to dig into some of that fringster mobile VoIP goodness.

You can get fring on your Sony Ericsson P990i in 3 steps:

1. Check that you have the latest firmware. (Go to Main Menu / System Information. The latest firmware is R6D23). If you don’t have it, get it from Sony Ericsson. Go grab a cup of coffee - it will take about 15 minutes to install.
2. Get an audio plug-in from fring here (takes about 5 seconds)
3. Get fring via SMS as usual (fring should be up & running within about a minute as usual)

Sony Ericsson fringsters will enjoy the same fring functionality as the rest of us (except no history yet).

…….like you’d use the P990i for anything else…. ;-p

fring 3.20 for Symbian 9 is out!

Have a Symbian 9 operating system on your device?Well fring just released an updated fring client for Nokia S60 Version 9 handsets (N80, E61, N91, N73 etc.).

This new version (at last) fixes the volume issue so now you can hear the other party even better. And while we were at it, we combined ‘search a fring contact’ with ‘invite a new friend’ to create an easy and fast way to add new fringsters.

Known Issue:
On N71 (firmware 4.0642.1.05), if fring is unable to find a valid access point and you click on ‘Exit’ - the application will close with an error message “App Closed: fring”.

To try this version - simply go to our download page and …. oh, you know the drill.

Enjoy and let us know if there are any problems.
