I need help here in the middle of the Klein Karoo with only MTN connection. Is anyone ready to tell me which NOKIA cell phone models will work with SKYPE and FRING in conjunction? Skype says this on their website: “Calling with Skype is only available in Australia, Brazil (Rio de Janeiro & Sao Paulo), Denmark, Estonia, Finland, New Zealand, Poland, Sweden, the United States and the UK.” Does it mean that Skype does not work on mobiles in SA? Or does it mean that VOIP does not work but ‘chat’ does?

Hello Reinhold,

Thanx for the comment.

Both Skype and fring work on many high end Nokia handsets in South Africa.

The official Skype mobile app is currently in beta and as far as I know you cannot make VoIP calls using the Skype mobile app, however text chatting works fine. (I may be mistaken, as I am only talking about testing I have done using my Nokia N73, it may be different on other handsets, best to speak to skype directly about this.)

The fring mobile app however, allows both VoIP and text chatting and calling. VoIP works best over 3G, HSDPA or WiFi connection though.

The Nokia 5800 is currently one of my favorite handsets, it is not very costly, (R149 per month x 24month contracts with MTN) It supports VoIP calling using the fring app. The handset comes with 3G, HSDPA and Wifi connectivity.

Please refer to your service provider though for VoIP usage terms.
