iPhone updates

It’s been a busy weekend at the fring HQ. We would like to thank you all for your inputs, feedbacks, kind words and bug reports, Keep them coming.

After reading hundreds of mails, here’s a few things I thought we should point out:

1. The annoying “dot in the Email” bug -
So this is now a known bug that prevented some users from registering. We are working on it and will issue a solution ASAP.
In the meantime you have a few options:
- If you’re using gmail you can drop the dot and register as abcd@gmail.com instead of ab.cd@gmail.com - gmail supports this kind of modification to the user name.
- If you’re not using gmail you can leave this field empty and register with no Email address. Please write down your user ID and password since you won’t have an option to retrieve your password at a later stage.

We are already working on a fix to this bug - it should be available on the App Store in the next few days.

2. “Call terminated” on Skype and SIP
In most cases you’ll get this error when trying to make a call to a not recognized number. In order to make a successful call you should enter the number in its international format, for example:

For the US dial +1XXXXXXXX or 001XXXXXXXX
For the UK dial +44XXXXXX or 0044XXXXXXXX

But the best way to make an ‘Out’ call is by choosing a contact from the address book (Apple inc. in this example) -> Choose the type of call (SIP or Skype Out) -> Here you’ll have a chance to edit the number so it will fit the international format -> Click ‘OK’ and you’re done.

Please make sure you’re fully loggen in to Skype when trying to make the call, during the peek time this might take 2-3 min.

I’ll get back to my Emails now, we’ll be back here with more tips and tricks. Keep the feedback coming and thanks for your support.

This is just a sampling of the huge success of Fring for the iPhone. It debuted as the top free app on the App Store in many countries around the world, such as

Greece, Hungary, Lebanon, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Norway, and Poland

    No. 2 in

    Australia, Denmark, India, and Pakistan.

    No. 3 in

    UK and US.

Please solve the touch-tone issue first, which is required for checking voice mail on SIP netwrok.
    Thank you!

I have tried this method and I’m still having problems making calls with Skype. Also for some reason I am not able to connect to Fring on my home network connection, but it will work while I am at a different location. A solution would be helpful to this problem as Fring is one of my most anticipated apps for the Iphone.

Please comment on using Fring with Itouch 1G.
I have not bought a microphone, but have read that there is a problem getting microphones to work with itouch and 2.x operating system. Has anyone tested this and if so can you recommend a mic that works.
    Thanks

I know it’s not your limitation, but that of the iPhone, but the lack of ability to use Fring on anything but a WiFi connection makes me very sad.

Fring on the iphone still doesn’t allow one to make skypeout calls despite the use of the international dialing conventions and during full log-in state as you have stated on your blog. This is a bug that should be addressed.

I have found the following issues.

    1) If you type in a number and click history instead of SIP, then you go back to dial, the number is gone. You have to retype it. That’s annoying.

    2) If you have successfully made a call and a robot answers asking you to press 1, 2, 3, etc., you can’t. Fring won’t allow you to send more numbers. It thinks you are trying to dial again and tells you that you can only have one outgoing voice call.

    3) Speakerphone is not supported.

    4) You can’t forward a GSM call to a fring’s SIP.

    5) It’s slow to start.

    6) Ask apple to let it run in the background or register with iPhone’s push service.

    7) Doesn’t work over 3G, Edge, etc. I know Apple, again. At least, they should allow it in the countries where it is sold unlocked. They have nothing to gain, nor lose.

Well I’ve tried a lot and read everything I can find, I CANNOT make skype out calls (except the test call)

I have Skype Pro so Skype out is free, I get the dreaded ‘call terminated’ error every time. I have not had a single stressful call, I am logged in (so says the check in Fring) I’ve used the +1xxxxxxxxxx and the 001xxxxxxxxxx formats to absolutely no avail.

It looks like Fring hit the charts running but if Skype out epic fails on this level for so many users they will quickly turn their back on it and never look back.

Let us know when this app crippling bug is fixed, thanks for all the hard work guys.

I tried the +1 or 001, they randomly works. Very annoying. I think it is a bug. Any ideas when this would be corrected?

Hi. Thanks for the great app!! I really love it.

Just one request here. Is there any way to use skype call on speaker phone, so I can talk hands free? I don’t hear well when I put iPhone to my ear and I usually use it with speaker on. Hope you put this feature for the next update.

    Cheers.

I tried subscribing with Yahoo and Skype. I have contacts who use the same name for both and it seems it can’t display both of them at the same time. In my case it only displays the yahoo contact. Also it would be great if it can distinguish whether the contact is really online or signed on their mobile (for Yahoo). Plus you can maybe add a different logo or icon for each carrier in the main menu. Or just something so we can easily identify if its Yahoo or Skype. But a real great app overall! keep the updates coming though.

    Nice Work! Thanks!

So I can make Skype and SIP calls, and today the sound quality is pretty good, but there is HUGE latency, like 3-5 seconds. Is this a known issue? Is it because it has to go to the Fring server first and then the Skype server? It makes the outgoing call feature completely unusable.

Please address the lack of a keypad during a call. One of the great things about fring + skypeout is I can call businesses from my iPhone over wifi for free. However I cannot navigate phone systems without a keypad for entering numbers. This makes fring useless for calling businesses. A comment that you guys are working on this would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work, I’ve made a blog post and told all my iPhone buddies about your great app.

Another thing that needs to be looked at is call quality. Take a look at PennyTel Mobile and the call quality is a lot clearer! Also calling out doesn’t work all the time. Some updates will make this a great app!

Excellant app for getting all my IM clients together. Love that.

Skype will not work for me. Or rather I got it to work once, using 00 1 area code etc., but nothing has gone through since. Just “Call Terminated”.

    Google Talk never worked.

My fring buddy list has only the chat id names no phone numbers or emails (other than gmail). That’s lame, and makes the phone function pretty useless.

I really hope you get it fixed. So much potential to be a really useful app. As of now, though, other than for seeing all my chat clients at once, it’s kinda a bust. At least for me.

How do I know when Skype has successfully logged in? Does Fring somehow notify me? Or…. ?

Why not disable the Skype button until Skype fully logs in to avoid confusion?

I have a fring account in my iPhone 3G.
I have a google account on my PC.
I’m running google-talk on my PC.
I can log into the “fring, google-talk add-on” on my iPhone.

How do I place a call from my iPhone… to
    my PC?

The docs tell everything *EXCEPT* what to
    do next.

I am amazed that this app was released with
It’s major functionality blatantly not working.
Was there any testing? How could this have been
missed?I can’t imagine this app ever having
A following that would be willing to pay for the
App after this fiasco. Very, very dissappointing.

It really looks like Fring will be very cool once they get the ‘call terminated’ bug worked out. Like others I am dialing correctly for Skype Out calls, am logged in, the test call worked, but have not been able to make one single call. And if that weren’t enough, even my buddy list did not show up. For now, I will have to continue to tell friends to use TruPhone, which has a unique feature Fring lacks: it works. Might check back to see if they fix it. Might not.

    - Dialer not standardised [two different layouts] dialer
via buddy list not same as dialer accessed via Menu
Icon. Menu dialer does not support ‘+’ input for
    SkypeOut dialing.
    - Call History cannot be deleted

I used the early version of Fring for the jailbroken iPhone. That version was able to run in the background, but it seems that this one can’t. Am I doing something wrong? If not, are you going to correct this issue?

I was getting the “call terminated error” I was trying using the synced contacts from the Skype address book which are in the format (925)xxx-xxxx off course this format works OK on skype no my PC.

I looked at the blog and tried 001xxxxxxxxxx format that works. I my question is that iF i can use my skype out on my PC with the 001 in front of US numbers why cant I use it using fring?

I too am having the SkypeOut call failure even though the test call works fine.

I don’t know all that much about the 3G protocol but is it possible that my carrier (Fido) is packet sniffing and detecting VoIP packets and consequently choking this somehow? It would make sense as they have an interest in stopping this from working as it cuts into their long distance business.

Seems most of the people here did not get it :

    - Fring is free so if it does not fit you, go away.

    - Skype is closed protocol so id it does not work, you will never know why.

    - Apple does not want you to use VOIP over 3G … Humm, but you knew this before buy this lock-in iphone thingy isn’t it ? So not fring’s fault YOUR fault.

  44. on 15 Oct 2008 at 1:14 am 44.Fred said …

BTW - To all: when making a call through Fring on your iTouch (and probably on your iPhone as well - I don’t have one of those), assuming you have SkypeOut, ensure you precede the call with a plus sign. To get the plus, hold down the zero button on the Fring dialout keypad until the + appears, then continue with “1″ (for calls in North America) then the number.

I know that having to add the + sucks, but that seems to be the only way to make it work…

To add a buddy, from Skype on your PC: select Contacts and Add then “Add an ordinary phone number as a SkypeOut contact” and complete it.

I’m not sure how long it takes to show up on Fring, but it will eventually…
